Does government outsource too much?

 

Andrew Haldenby, Director of Reform, appeared on Today this morning to argue that private companies are accountable when they deliver public services.

He pointed out that there is a Ministry of Justice official onsite when prisons are delivered privately, to impose penalties immediately if the contract is breached.  He said that private companies would be happy for details of contracts to be more publicly available; for example, the contract between Circle and the NHS to run Hinchingbrooke Hospital is available on the Internet.
